Every morning I get up at the crack of dawn, get my little ones ready for school, feed and water the baby, release the hounds and jump in my oversized SUV and head for the car loop at the elementary and pre-school for drop-off. And all before 8am. On the way home I grab a double shot caf from Starbucks and then head to the "office" (my home office of course) where my husband is with the baby. Sometimes he makes this morning trek, sometimes I do. But it always end the same way - at 8am the baby goes back to sleep, the Starbucks is hot and the glow of our computer monitors light the room. Peace....
Lately my DH (who also works from home) has been turning on the TV in our office where he flips back and forth, back and forth, back and forth between MTV and VH1. Now, here's where I give away my age....
What is the deal with MTV and VH1? First, they only play videos for a few hours a day so you'd think that they would not need to play the same 10 videos over and over again. In the last week or so, I've seen the Justin Timberlake video about 5,000 times. I am sorry to say, I can sing most of the song. I don't have anything against Justin... but gesh! Enough already. Ditto for Beyonce, Fergie and whoever sings "Smack That" (sure to oneday be a classic.... ) Back in the day, MTV played videos all day long. A variety of videos. But somewhere along the way, while I was changing diapers and watching Clifford the Big Red Dog, something changed. Now everyone is downloading videos to their Ipods. Who has time for that? !!
So, maybe I just need to change my morning routine. Which got me to thinking... what do YOU do while you are working from home? What do you listen or watch? Or do you prefer to go without?

Michelle - were you a writer in a past life? You have a style all your own.
I am feeling your pain on this MTV thing. Most of them time, I turn it on and then change the channel quickly before my six year old gets an eyefull. They should change the name to SBTV (spring break TV - because its like a 24 hour beer and bikini party on that channel!)
I am old school like you. But I don't tend to have any music or tv while I am working. I am a writer mostly so I need peace in order to concentrate. In fact, the only thing I have on in the background is a portable fan - not for cooling but for the constant white noise.
Thanks to you guys I was hired last week as a content producer for a group that has 20 or so websites. This is a GREAT job - my dream really so I couldn't be happier. The company is really relaxed so maybe in the future I will be able to work a little music in my workday just for fun.
I am in complete agreement here ... what happened to those channels over the years???
I too remember back in the day when they played videos 24/7 instead of all of the "garbage" they show now. And yes how annoying it is when you do get videos and they are the same 5 to 10 ones over and over and over again! I also tried the country video channels but to my dismay they are exactly the same so ...
Now a days my DH and I work from home enjoying each others conversation, listening to our own CD's or just the plain quiet (until the kids come home at least. We have a teenager and a pre-teen in the house so it is usually pretty lively in the evening and on the weekends.)
Both my husband and I work from home and we home school our daughter. To avoid her seeing all the things that she should not be seeing at her age we disconnected our cable service. We find ourselves listening to wonderful uplifting music on the radio, reading plenty of books and devoting our time to our daughter. Since we turned off our cable service my daughter has learned how to add and subtract, and her reading skills are way up. From time to time we will sit down and watch pbs maybe even play a video game. Overall, not having VH1 and MTV made things simpler and happier at home.
I call it the 'CSPAN' syndrome. You see, for this analogy, you must compare news with music videos. CSPAN started out with all kinds of cool news stories (in MTV world, this would mean Duran Duran or Depeche Mode) and no spin-off talk shows (in MTV world, this would be the 'Real World'). Then, as more blonde children got kidnapped (in MTV world, this is Janet's nipple) and more celebraties got divorced (in MTV world, this is... well no difference there), CSPAN had to exSPANd. This created more news channels. MTV also created more music channels. In the end, there are 8 different CSPAN channels and 8 different MTV channels. To find any music or news on either you have to go to the last one created. This is also why I call MTV the EBMT channel... it's Everything But Music Television. Oh yeah, Timberlake can go to CSPAN for all I care.
