I have considered SMC (Specialty Merchandise Corporation) for a while now, but can't seem to make myself take the step. Has anyone had any experience with them? Is it really a good opportunity for an at home business or is it mostly talk?
Any information or stories are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Renee

I have worked the business with SMC since 1997, I love it. I hire Sub-Wholesalers to work with me, this way you do not have to pay the fee for you to join SMC, for kit and everything needed to get start which is up in the hundreds., anyway if you like you can write me and I will send you information on becoming a Sub-Wholesaler. This way you can try the program before you really commit. Be sure to put SMC sub-wholesaler info in subject line. That way I know not to send you to my junk mail. Good-Luck
I used to be a member of SMC in the past. It didn't last very long I can tell you that much. Unless you have people you can sell to... do not bother with it. You cannot use the internet to sell these items. To many people are already selling on the internet. This is what I was trying to accomplish with SMC. The prices are fantastic, the items are beautiful, but to many people are selling them. So lets say one of the items is 5.95 for you to buy. It says you can resell it for 25.95 -- making a 20.00 profit from one item! Then you realize 50 other people are selling this same item at the time you are trying to do so. So your 20.00 profit just dropped to purchasing the item for 5.95 and trying to sell it for 6.95 -- 1.00. Sometimes people can't even sell the item, with it priced that low.
I also tried to buy many items beforehand and bring them to the flea market.. three flea markets to be exact. In my own City, at three different flea markets, there were atleast four other booths of SMC items. Its really to difficult to sign up with that company these days. To many people already beat you to it. I signed up two years ago and it was that bad, I can't imagine how hard it is to sell items today. During my six months as a member, I sold ten items. Five were to family members, four at a flea market, and one online.
So if you do decide to do this... I hope you have resources or are willing to go door-to-door. The company itself is not bad. The competition is.
It seems I am getting a lot of the same thing, the competition is tough. I have requested some sub wholesaler info from a fellow member and I will look it over and compare area flea markets and ebay as recommended. Thanks for the recommendations and advice.
So, does anyone know of any similar opportunities with other companies that aren't as "used?" Thanks for all the information and suggestions. They are greatly appreciated.
I tried for over one year to sell SMC merchandise using the online storefront I purchased from them, including their marketing services (needed to attract customers). In over one year, I sold 5 items .... all to myself to be used as gifts. Yet when you watch their infomercials, you see people are supposedly having success on the internet. Well I tried it offering all of my SMC products at a 40% discount and I was the only customer. That says something about their marketing service.
Please understand that I have not tried selling SMC using other methods.
