I get all kinds here at SOHOjobs. The desperate, the excited, the know-it-alls, the charming, even the clairvoyant and a parolee. Ah, my SOHO'ers... gotta love them. They come in many shapes and forms, but most leave with a great work at home job regardless of it all.
But dealing with skeptics ...... now that is hard work. As you know, so many job seekers have been frustrated, disappointed, and dissatisfied with the genre of home based job searching. They've been scammed, treated poorly, and lied to. They are angry and looking to vent. Who can blame them?
According to the dictionary, a Skeptic is someone who questions the validity or authenticity of something purported to be factual. So, in this regard, a skeptic is a good thing! But some skeptics are really Nay-Sayers or someone who is opposed to anything new just for the sake of it. The real defining factor here is if they are able to think critically and logically.
Here's a story for you:
About two weeks ago I did this call-in radio program about, you guessed it... working from home. Most of the questions were typical stuff - how to spot scams, how to find jobs, etc.
Well, then I get a call from "Debbie". She's starts the conversation with "Michelle, you are a liar and an idiot. Real work at home jobs do not exist and anyone who believes that crap is stupid." Hmmm, just opinionated or potential lunatic? I tried to lighten things by saying "Mom, is that you?" but this did not go over well. I asked her what type of work she was looking for and she said...
(actual transcript follows:)
Debbie: I've been trying to find something simple that I can do from home to make good money like envelope stuffing or typing or something like that and all you people do is take my money and give me nothin and that is why you are all liars because if real jobs were there I would have one."
Michelle: Are you a SOHOjobs subscriber, Debbie?
Debbie: No.
Michelle: Well, you know Debbie, you are right about envelope stuffing. Real jobs do not exist which is why SOHOjobs does not list them. SOHOjobs subscribers know that envelope stuffing is a scam. In fact, I do not know of any real employers that hire actual staff to stuff envelopes however..."
Debbie: [interrupts] See! Even you admit it! I am sick and tired of you people
Michelle: Maybe you can tell me a little about your skills or education? Or maybe your interests? I would love to help you find something legit and I know it can be done. You just need to know where to look and have the right 'fit'.
Debbie: I don't have skills. That is why I am looking for something easy that pays good. If I wanted a real job that required work I would go get a job at Walmart of something.
Michelle: Oh, okay. Well, umm - what about your interests? What do you like to do? What type of career would you like to have? Do you enjoy dealing with people, or maybe ........
Debbie: [interrupts] AREN'T YOU LISTENING? I just told you, I don't want a career, I just want something easy I can do from home that will get me some good money to pay my bills and all that. I mean is that too much to ask for? I see jobs advertised all the time for work at home typers and envelope people. And now you are telling me that its a scam because you are all scammers, aren't you?
Michelle: It sounds like the type of jobs that you are after are not realistic opportunities. But, there are many real home based employers who would be willling to give you -
Debbie: [interrupts] See, you don't have anything to say now. Because you are a scam.
At this point, she hung up. We all shared a moment of silence and then a bewildered chuckle. The radio guy said "I guess Elvis left the building." "No wonder he's been in hiding, he must be off his med's," his sidekick said.
Debbie left the conversation without ever hearing about all the real companies that hire home based workers to handle phone calls, help customers, prepare documents, transcribe notes, obtain information, sell services, research and enter data, and complete projects. It's probably for the best because there is not one employer that I know of that would hire Debbie to do something "easy" from home without having any skills to offer. Even if they did, they would never offer it to someone with such a rude, self serving attitude.
Debbie lacks the ability to think logically, at least with regards to working from home. She wants something NOW without offering anything in return. She blames me (and probably evenone else!) for her failures, despite that fact that she's never even been a SOHOjobs subscriber. She is a creature of routine who does not have the ability to think outside the box. She will shout and carry on, cry fraud, call names and point fingers... everything except examine her own situation.
The bottom line - You get what you believe in.
If you are closed minded, angry and lack self confidence, the world will respond in kind. On the other hand, if you are optimistic, hard working, and confident - things will happen. It means you don't get frustrated, you don't blame, you don't get cynical and you don't get angry. Instead you see opportunity, you embrace it and you are prepared for it. In other words... YOU GET HIRED!
A fundamental truth I've learned is that the only limits people face are the limits they impose on themselves.
SOHOjobs can provide you the tools, but you need to provide the foundation for which to build on. This is teamwork at its best, and it will work if you let it work for you.
So anyway, the next day - after the radio show, I got an email from Julie.
"Dear Michelle, I heard your radio program yesterday and I just wanted to let you know that "Debbie" had it all wrong. I joined SOHO about two years ago and have been working at home for the same employer ever since. This was like a dream come true for me. I will admit, I was a little skeptical before I joined SOHO but I could appreciate the true and basic value that you were offering. You had a ton of great jobs listed, but I also understood that it would take effort and conviction on my part. Someone should tell "Debbie" that she is never going to get what she wants until she wakes up and smells the bad attitude. Thank you Team SOHO for working with me to live my dream of working from home" Julie Stevens, SOHOjobs subscriber from 2004
See? If you really want to work from home, and you have some skills and a great attitude, you will get hired. I mean, there is no shortage of awesome job leads here at SOHOjobs! And there is no shortage of people getting hired. (Check out the I got Hired! forum for proof). But it takes two to Tango. Me and you, kid. I can bring the paints and brushes but you've got to have a canvas to build on.
Being a skeptic is smart. But being a fatuous pessimist is a waste of time.
